The study grant authority in Austria invites application for Masters & PhD programs for eligible and interested candidates
About- According to Austrian law, the parents of students are obliged to pay for the financial needs of their children until they are self-sufficient. This also includes completing a purposefully pursued degree. Only if the parents or the student are not in a position to cover the costs associated with a degree from their own resources should the study grant intervene. This also results in the two main eligibility requirements for Masters & PhD programs the social eligibility and the existence of favorable academic success .

Eligibility/Qualification–
For master’s degrees , in addition to the general eligibility requirements for receiving a study grant, the following requirements must also be met:
- The master’s course must be started no later than 30 months after the first completion of a bachelor’s course. The following times are not included in the deadline: military, training or community service or services according to the Volunteer Act, pregnancy, maternity leave, illness and an unforeseen / inevitable event.
- The master’s degree must be started before the age of 35, provided that the bachelor’s degree has been started before reaching the age limit applicable to the bachelor’s degree (usually before the age of 30) (reference date: start of the respective semester). Special regulations regarding the age limit for the master’s degree also apply to self-supporters, students with children and students with disabilities.
- The legal period of study for the bachelor’s degree may not be exceeded by more than three semesters. If there are important reasons that caused the study delay through no fault of the student, the study time exceeded can be checked.
- 10 semester hours or 20 ECTS points from the sponsored master’s degree must be proven as a favorable academic success for continuing to receive the study grant from the third semester.
- In order to continue receiving the study grant from the seventh semester (if you are still entitled to study grant due to additional semesters), 42 semester hours or 90 ECTS points from the sponsored master’s degree must be proven.
Note : Please note the special regulations for students at private universities (30 ECTS per year) with regard to academic success.
If the required academic success is not presented, a refund can be made.
For doctoral programs , in addition to the general eligibility requirements for receiving a study grant, the following requirements must also be met:
- The doctoral program must build on a diploma program, master’s program or a university of applied sciences course.
- The doctoral program must be started no later than 12 months after completing the previous program. The following times are not included in the deadline: military, training or community service, or services under the Volunteer Act, pregnancy, maternity leave, illness and unforeseen / inevitable events.
- The doctoral program must be started before the age of 30. Exceptions (before the age of 35) apply to self-supporters, students with children and students with disabilities.
- The legal period of study for the first stage of a diploma course may not be exceeded by more than twice plus an additional semester. If there are important reasons that caused the study delay through no fault of the student, the study time exceeded can be checked. A separate application for forbearance is required for this.
- For diploma courses that consist of two study sections, the legal period of study for the second study section may not be exceeded by more than two semesters. (Forbearance possible; see fourth point above)
- For diploma courses that consist of three study sections, the legal period of study for the second and third study section may not be exceeded by more than two semesters in total. (Forbearance possible; see fourth point above)
- Neither the statutory period of study for a bachelor’s degree nor the subsequent master’s degree may be exceeded by more than two semesters. (Forbearance possible; see fourth point above)
- The legal period of study for a university of applied sciences course may not be exceeded by more than two semesters. (Forbearance possible; see fourth point above)
- Six semester hours or twelve ECTS points must be proven as a favorable academic success for continuing to receive the study grant from the third semester. After the sixth semester, the successful academic success must be proven by a confirmation from the dissertation supervisor that the dissertation has progressed successfully.
Job/Position Description-
When calculating the amount of the grant, a fixed amount, the so-called “maximum study grant”, is assumed.
The maximum annual study grant is € 8,580 for:
- Students who have to live at the place of study because the daily return trip from their parents’ place of residence to the place of study is not reasonable in terms of time and are officially registered at the place of study (main or secondary residence)
- Students who have reached the age of 24
- Students whose parents have died (full orphans)
- Students who are legally obliged to care for and bring up at least one child
- Married students or students in a registered partnership
- Students who have received all of their own income for at least four years from their own income before receiving a grant for the first time (see self-sustaining scholarship )
For students who do not meet any of the above requirements, the maximum annual study grant is € 6,000.
