Eligibility

Candidates must meet all of the following criteria to qualify for the JISPA PhD Scholarship:

  • Eligible Nationality: Must be a citizen of one of the 21 target nations across South & Southeast Asia, Central Asia, and the Pacific.
  • Public Sector Employment: Must be a currently employed public-sector official nominated by an eligible government agency (e.g., Central Bank, Ministry of Finance, Tax Authority).
  • Work Experience & Age: Preference is given to applicants under 38 years of age with a minimum of 2 years of active public-sector work experience.
  • Academic Standing: Must hold a Master’s degree in economics or a closely related field with an outstanding academic record.
  • University Admission: Must independently secure admission to an English-taught PhD program in economics at an accredited Japanese university.
  • Leave Status: Must not have been on leave for more than 1 continuous month in the 12 months prior to September 1, 2027 (with some exceptions).
