The University of Tokyo invites international students to apply for the fully funded UTRIP 2026 Research Internship. This program offers students an opportunity to engage in world-class research and enhances their academic journey while experiencing the vibrant culture of Japan.

  • 🎓 Eligibility: Must have completed at least one year of a Bachelor’s program, enrolled in a science-related field, and plan to return to a degree program after UTRIP. Priority given to third-year students in 4-year programs or second-year in 3-year programs.
  • 🌏 Commitment: Full-time participation in six consecutive weeks, including all academic and social events. Health insurance coverage required during stay in Japan.
  • 🗣️ English Requirement: TOEFL/IELTS scores required unless English is first language or 8+ years of continuous English-medium education. Expired scores accepted with proof.
  • 📝 Application Materials: Personal information, selection of up to two hosting labs/projects, personal statement (700–1000 words), resume/CV, scanned academic transcripts, GPA, English test scores if applicable, one recommendation letter.
  • 📅 Deadlines: Applications by Jan 7, 2026, 17:00 JST; recommendation form by Jan 14, 2026, 17:00 JST. No late submissions accepted.
  • 🏆 Selection & Notification: Based on submitted documents; notifications online in early April 2026 and directly by email mid-to-late March.
  • 💻 Online Submission: All materials must be uploaded online; system does not allow saving; applicants responsible for completeness.
  • 📊 Reports & Presentations: Must submit a final written research report within two weeks after program and give an oral presentation on the scheduled day.

Eligibility/Qualification

  • Candidates should be on the path to achieving long-term career goals in science.
  • Must be able to commit to the entire duration of the program.

Job Description

  • Engage in research projects relevant to the student’s field of study.
  • Participate in all scheduled educational programs of the UTRIP online program.
  • Submit written research reports and present findings orally.
